PISA airport, FLORENCE airport, Pontedera, car rental agencies and the train
What you see above is the street-side view of the one and only building at the Pisa airport, aka Galileo Galilei International Airport. It's a very small airport. There are essentially only 2 gates - one for departures and the other for arrivals. It's about 40 minutes from here by car to the vacation home in Toiano. When searching for airfare and airline tickets to Pisa, the airport code is PSA. There are several car rental agencies located next to the airport. Make sure you read online reviews before choosing a rental agency. They do have automatics but they are usually a little more expensive than stick-shifts. We would HIGHLY recommend getting a rental car while you are here. Driving here is fairly easy, especially if you have a GPS device or smart phone (with international data plan). We highly recommend you bring your own GPS device!
Florence's airport is known both as Peretola and formally as Amerigo Vespucci, their code is FLR. You can fly in to Florence if you prefer, but it's 15 or 20 minutes more to get here by car depending on traffic in Florence, and airplane tickets are often several hundred dollars more to Florence than Pisa, though that's not consistent so check both to see if driving a little further is worth the savings in airfare. Also, the airport in Florence is inside the city, whereas Pisa's airport is outside which makes getting in and getting out of Galilei very easy Also, there is usually only light road traffic between Pisa's airport and the vacation home in Toiano. Just fyi the distance between the 2 airports is 80 km (about 50 miles).
There are train stations in Pisa, and the nearest train station to our home that most people use is in Pontedera. Pontedera is the largest of the small cities in our region (and happens to be home to Piaggio, the maker of the world famous Vespa scooters, we recommend seeing their fun museum). But from Pontedera to the house, you would have to get someone to pick you up at the train station, or take a bus part way and have someone pick you up at the bus stop, or take a taxi. Again, we highly recommend you get your own rental car.
